Change

As a heads up, there will be changes coming to TheMaelstrom Playlist that accompanies this blog.

As I feel like I have mentioned before, I use Lyrion Music Server at home, which uses a plugin called Spotty which is tirelessly maintained for the wider community by Michael Herger. Spotty is a beast of two halves - one that manages playback, and the other that manages Synchronisation of the Spotify profile, playlists, liked music etc.

However, after the kerfuffle leading into Christmas last year and Spotify's subsequent crack down on API usage and TPS, large playlists are now the enemy of Spotty and maintaining a functioning home audio system! We almost had to go without our Xmas Crass and Metal Mix playlist on the big day when it all blew up! Thankfully I had a local backup in M3U format that bypassed the inability to sync!

Anyhoo, the prevailing thought so far is to either:

  • split the playlist into multiple equal sized lists with 50 or so entries
  • OR, treat it like a daylist where there is only a sliding window of 50 or so entries (little more work to maintain)
  • OR, do all of the above so that the main playlist is the sliding window AND there are multiple 'archival' playlists so nothing is lost, and if you want to you can go back in time (most work, but assumed to give the best customer experience).

Why is it that the best customer experience ALWAYS requires the most effort? ;) Keep an eye out for the addition of a 'The Playlists' page in the top menu.

In the meantime, another song for your troubles...
