What better way to celebrate International Women's Day than to handpick an all-Aussie selection of Female Fronted Fury! Five of them in fact. That's a lot of EFF's.
It was a tough call between Baby Animals, The Superjesus or Chrissie Amphlet for the opener. So, I just flipped a coin ... twice... and it was Baby Animals declared winner!
Dark Fair opened for Veruca Salt, at the Corner Hotel in 2014. We were there for VS, as it was the first time that I could experience live 'the' band that had sparked that initial connection between B and I so many years ago. However Dark Fair made quite the impression. A Melbourne two piece that were able to produce a 'wall of sound' so thick that you were looking for the other band members. I encourage you to explore beyond the limited releases on Spotify and checkout their Bandcamp for where it all started.
Next up is WAAX, who I was directed to by the 'O'man. Triple J Unearthed winners in 2014, they also made the Triple J Hottest 100 of 2018 with 'Labrador'. Punk / Alternative influences are definitely evident here, and it showed in the energy of their live shows! Definitely a lot to explore here so take your time.
A sneaky little 'double post' next, with a Billie Eilish original that's been given the Aussie twist through the genius of the Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers on Triple J's like a version! My 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon is quite good here - with my BFF AJ's Business Coach being the father of one of the band members... small world! TJATJT also have an ever-expanding punk influenced catalog that is well worth spending an afternoon relaxing to.
And lastly, to round out the list, we get our full punk on. This also allows me to do an early post for tomorrow to keep my 'at least 1 a day streak' going. Amy Taylor is the unapologetic ringleader of Amyl and the Sniffers. Amy lives life by her own rules. Pure punk, this is not one for the faint of heart or those easily offended lyrically. Maybe not one for your conservative Grandma - or actually - maybe give it a go and see what happens?!? Currently touring the states, they're headlining as well as supporting some of the big names (QOTSA). Check 'em out the next time they're at your local venue!
